Since you learned to read many years ago, you will have picked up many bad habits. You may sub-vocalise or lip read or both. You may be re-reading passages many times, both for increased comprehension and often because you didn’t really read it in the first place! You are also likely to be flicking back and forward along the a line and stopping many times.

You read only when the eyes are stopped, not moving. This ‘stop’ period for the eye is about quarter of a second for normal reading. With your current habits you could be making as many as 40 eye ‘stops’ on a single line. After the course you could be making as little as 4 ‘eye stops’. This both increases speed and lessens eye strain.
